Vendor Managed Inventory

  

VMI is a service provided by suppliers for their customers. It allows suppliers to manage the customer's inventories of their products. In other words, the supplier monitors usage data for a specific material at agreed intervals with the aid of a VMI system and automatically replenishes the customer's stocks.

 
Sensors measure the level of product in a tank and transmit this information to the Internet-based VMI system. As soon as a certain level is reached, a manual or automatic re-supply order is generated. This is transmitted manually or automatically to the supplier's ERP system (e.g. SAP R/3) where it triggers a re-supply process.
