New ABS grade for medical technology

Lustran Polymers has added Lustran M205FC to its range of ABS grades for medical technology. It was presented at the press conference in advance of K 2007.

The new material offers greater stiffness and strength than the Lustran M203FC that is already established in this market sector. “It is therefore ideal for components that require particular dimensionally stability – such as roller clamps and piercing pins,” explains Kirsten Wiele, Manager for the Medical Technology Industry at Lustran Polymers. A further strength is its improved resistance to chemicals. The new material also has great potential for use in components for inhalers, infusion sets and surgical instruments.

Lustran M205FC can be sterilized with ethylene oxide and, as is increasingly popular, with gamma and electron radiation. This method is more effective, gentler and less time-consuming than sterilization with ethylene oxide or superheated steam. Like all the medical technology materials supplied by Lustran Polymers, the new ABS grade meets the requirements of the American standard US-Pharmacopeia, Class VI, and the superordinate international standard ISO 10993-1, relating to the biocompatibility of plastics. It will also be listed in the Drug Master File (DMF) of the U.S. Federal Drug Administration (FDA).

Other ABS products that Lustran Polymers supplies to the medical technology sector are Lustran M301FC, which is ideal for components with a high impact strength, and Lustran 348, which is produced in the United States.

“We attach great importance to our role as a reliable supplier and development partner for the medical technology industry. We will therefore continue to supply our material grades – and standard colors – to this sector in the long term. What’s more, we will ensure that the formulations for these materials and colors remain constant – in line with DMF requirements,” says Wiele.

Lustran Polymers offers manufacturers of medical instruments a comprehensive technical support service.  “For example, we develop materials and colors in line with specific customer requirements. If required, we help customers to design and construct components, carry out rheological examinations, and offer support and advice at the start of series production,” declares Wiele.
